Profile

Pacific Health has been involved in nutrition technology since 1995. They entered the market specializing in patented, protein-based supplements geared toward weight loss, the management of Type 2 Diabetes and sports performance. Because Pacific Health emphasizes the commercialization of nutritional products, they have since sold the technology and trademark for Accelerade to Mott's - a company they describe as a "leading brand in the beverage portfolio" of Cadbury Schweppes, a major international food and beverage company. However, Pacific Health still sells the gel and powder forms of Accelerade.

Straight Up Facts

Accelerade's technology goes back to 1997, when Pacific Health's research team decided that adding protein to a sports drink would produce better results. Using a patented formula with a four to one carbohydrate to protein ratio, Accelerade promises to restore fluids and electrolytes, replenish muscle glycogen, reduce free radical formation, prevent muscle breakdown and speed up muscle recovery. The water / carb formula (standard for sports drinks) hydrates and reenergizes your muscles, but the protein apparently increases the amount of energy that reaches the muscle, which then extends your endurance.

Straight Up Review

Overall, Accelerade impresses more runners and cyclists than it disappoints - but the accolades are not unanimous. The powder tends to score highest on performance - a lot of reviewers described feeling more energized while drinking the mix and several reported less muscle fatigue and soreness. People are more divided on the subject of taste and texture. Accelerade tends to be thick and filmy, and many reviewers warned against putting it in a camel pack because the film is hard to wash out.
